Do you look at yourself in the mirror and feel dismayed by the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, skin discolouration, dull and dehydrated skin and acne scarring?
If you are miserable with your skin, you’ve probably tried anything and everything to fix it. You may have tried countless over-the-counter lotions, serums and creams to address your skin issues, but with limited results. That’s because these products can only penetrate the most superficial layers of the skin, and are not strong or potent enough to make any lasting improvement or impact on your skin concerns.
It’s time to do something for your skin that actually works. At Therapeutic Aesthetics, our expert professionals will set you up with a professional chemical peel that targets even the peskiest skin concerns – that even Sephora can’t fix.
Professional chemical peels are cosmetic treatments that involve a specially-formulated chemical solution applied to your face by one of our professionally licensed medical aestheticians. This chemical solution safely and effectively causes the dead, topmost, superficial layers of the skin to exfoliate and peel off, revealing fresh, healthy, radiant, new and younger-looking skin. Our patients not only report glowing, youthful and balanced skin, but they are also ready to take on the world with confidence!
Chemical peels are most often applied to the face, but they can also be applied to the neck and hands to care for these neglected areas. Treating your skin to professional chemical peels at one of our medical spa clinics in the Greater Toronto Area is one of the most effective ways to treat signs of aging, skin discoloration, and UV damage. That’s not all – chemical peels can also correct damaged skin, hyperpigmentation, uneven skin texture, fine lines, and wrinkles. Chemical peels also improve overall skin health by stimulating the production of collagen and elastin in the skin, which helps stabilize skin function and support skin cell renewal. These benefits result in beautiful, radiant, smooth, even-toned and luminous skin.
At Therapeutic Aesthetics, we provide three different types of chemical peels. Each varies by strength.
Superficial chemical peels: These chemical peels use very mild acids (such as alpha-hydroxy acids, popularly known as AHAs) to exfoliate and penetrate only the outermost layer of skin. This type of peel is perfect to give your skin a pick-me-up.
Medium chemical peels: These chemical peels use stronger acids (trichloroacetic (TCA) or glycolic acid) to penetrate not only the outer layer of the skin but also the middle layers of the skin. This type of peel is perfect for mild scarring or mild imperfections.
Deep chemical peels: These extra-strength chemical peels use much stronger acids (phenol or trichloroacetic (TCA) acid) to penetrate and impact the middle layer of the skin. This type of peel is perfect for targeting deep issues, deep scarring and more complex concerns.

Professional chemical peels treat a variety of skin concerns and issues. To determine if you are an ideal candidate and what type of chemical peel is best for you, schedule a complementary consultation with one of our skin care professionals.
You are not a candidate for a professional chemical peel if you:
Chemical peels resurface the skin by exfoliating the topmost, dead layers of the skin, revealing fresh, healthy, new and radiant skin underneath. Chemical peels are perfect for addressing superficial and medium-depth skin concerns such as scaring, hyperpigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles, dullness and dehydration, uneven skin texture and uneven skin tone.
At Therapeutic Aesthetics, all of our chemical peels are performed in our medical spa by licensed aestheticians. Our medical spa offers the hygiene and clinical facilities of a medical clinic, as well as the relaxation and ambience of a spa. Depending on the type of peel you are having, topical or regional anesthetics may be applied to the target area to keep you comfortable during the procedure. To begin, we will first cleanse your skin and apply eye protection if needed. During your chemical peel, a chemical solution will be applied to your skin using a cotton ball, gauze, or brush. As your skin starts to whiten, you may experience a mild stinging sensation. Your expert medical aesthetician will then remove the chemical solution and/or apply a neutralizing solution to your skin. The professional chemical peel procedure generally takes up to an hour in most cases, and is the perfect appointment to schedule during your lunch break.
After having a chemical peel, your recovery will depend on the type of peel performed. Light chemical peels generally only require 4-7 days of recovery, medium peels take about 5-7 days and can be accompanied by swelling, and deep chemical peels take about 14 days and are accompanied by severe swelling and redness. During the recovery phase, your provider will give you specific instructions to follow. It is important to follow these instructions for the fastest recovery.
In order to get the best results from your professional chemical peel, it is important that you take proper care of your skin. Here are some tips collected by our expert medical aestheticians from their many years of experience:
Avoid touching the treatment area
This is a big one – and one of the most important ones. Your skin will be sensitized following the procedure, and you definitely don’t want to be triggering any inflammation by touching your skin. Also, you don’t want to be introducing harmful bacteria on to your freshly treated skin.
Wait at least 24 hours before washing your skin with a gentle cleanser
Because your skin is super sensitive following your treatment, you want to avoid touching it with anything, including water or with any skincare products. The first 24 hours are the most critical hours of healing for your freshly peeled skin, so you must avoid touching or cleaning the target area during this time.
After 24 hours wash your face with cool water
Cool water will numb irritation and sensitized skin.
Moisturize and hydrate your skin thoroughly
As your skin heals, it may be more susceptible to dryness due to the high-strength ingredients of the chemical peel. Therefore, be sure to hydrate your skin from the inside-out by drinking plenty of water (eight glasses a day!), as well as from the outside-in using high-quality moisturizing skincare products. Our expert skincare specialists would be happy to recommend the best hydrating products for your skin.
Protect your skin from harsh UV rays
Following your chemical peel (and most of the time, really) the sun is your enemy. UV rays can damage your skin, and your freshly peeled skin from your chemical peel treatment will be hyper-sensitive to environmental damage. You should by applying sunscreen, daily, with SPF30 or higher. You should also wear proper sun protection, including sunglasses and a wide brimmed hat. Finally, during the harsh afternoon hours, stay indoors if you can.
Avoid vigorous workouts, dry saunas and steam rooms while your skin heals
This ensures that you minimize the amount of sweat and heat, ensuring that harmful bacteria – which can cause hyper inflammation – is kept at bay.
Don’t over-exfoliate your skin or apply harsh products to it
Your skin is especially vulnerable because the topmost, dead layers have been sloughed off. Therefore, you need to really baby your skin, using only gentle skincare products. Our expert team would be happy to recommend you the right products for your skin.
The results of a chemical peel vary depending on the peel you receive. A superficial peel only addresses skin concerns at the surface of the skin. They can slightly reduce the signs of aging and skin damage with minimal results, unless you obtain them on a regular basis.
However, a superficial peel is the safest approach to professional chemical peels because they are lower-strength – they are a perfect starter treatment to get used to. After one treatment, you will notice an immediate difference in your skin texture and smoothness. It usually takes a few treatments to see a difference in more advanced skin concerns such as blemishes.
Medium peels penetrate the skin more deeply than superficial peels and are particularly effective in reducing signs of sun damage, fine lines and wrinkles. However, they are less safe than superficial peels, and they require more extended downtime.
A deep peel will noticeably tighten the skin and dramatically impact more problematic skin concerns such as deep wrinkles and fine lines. However, repeated deep peels are rarely recommended due to their exceptional strength.
It’s perfectly ok not to know which one of the many types of chemical peels is best for your skin – that’s why you consult the experts! Book a complimentary discovery consultation with one of our professionally trained and professionally licensed medical aestheticians for a personalized skin assessment and treatment plan that meets your unique skin needs.
How frequently you should obtain a chemical peel depends on the type of peel you are opting for, as well as the target issue you are treating. In most cases, you can schedule chemical peels every 2-4 weeks. However, we strongly recommend that you discuss your treatment goals with our specialists to develop a custom treatment plan that is unique to your needs.
No. We strongly advise that professional chemical peels, or any treatment that involves powerful, laboratory-grade, clinical-grade chemical ingredients, should always be applied by an expert licensed professional. You can run the risk of severely harming your skin, and ruining your delicate face (even permanently) if you attempt to try clinical-grade treatments by yourself. Always book your professional chemical peel with a trusted, licensed expert – at Therapeutic Aesthetics, we hire and train the very best in the field to bring the very best service to our clients.
Although chemical peels are not dangerous, having too many can be irritating to your skin. This is why it is important to create a treatment plan with one of our exceptionally talented medical specialists.
We have performed thousands of chemical peels for our clients over the years, and they come to us time and time again because they love and trust our expert service. Here are some tips and tricks we’ve collected from our years of experience to thoroughly prepare your skin for your chemical peel procedure.
Be sure to select the appropriate and right chemical peel for your skin
At Therapeutic Aesthetics, we have a variety of different chemical peels to choose from. The chemical peel treatment that you should choose must be appropriate for your particular skin needs and concerns, including your skin type, age, colour and skin condition. If you’re not sure which chemical peel is right for you, don’t stress! During your initial discovery consultation with our expert skin specialist, we will provide you with a complete and thorough skin assessment. We will help you identify which one of our amazing chemical peel treatments will best meet your needs.
Don’t exfoliate the treatment area
Chemical peels – even the light ones – are themselves very deeply exfoliating. To prevent yourself from injuring your delicate skin, it is critical that you avoid exfoliating the treatment area for at least a week or more prior to your chemical peel appointment. This means that you should avoid actively exfoliating the treatment area with a skin scrub. You should also watch out for ingredients in your daily skin products that have exfoliating effects. If you’re not sure, give us a call – we would be more than happy to help.
Don’t use anti-aging or anti-acne medications
This is the same concept as the previous point about exfoliation. Chemical peels contain high-quality, high-strength ingredients – if you use anti-aging or anti-acne medications, the compounding effect of these products along with your chemical peel may irritate or damage your skin. Your anti-aging or anti-acne medications may impact how your skin tolerates the chemical peel. Ideally, you should avoid using these products for at least a week prior to your appointment.
Stay hydrated
This is a big one. You want your skin primed and ready to receive the best benefits possible from your chemical peel. The best thing you can do for your skin is hydrate it, especially in the days leading up to your chemical peel appointment. Chug that water! This is the time to have lots of water-rich foods as well, such as fresh fruits and vegetables. Also, you should take special care to avoid using any skincare products that could be drying out your skin at least a few days before your appointment.
Wait until your skin is fully healed before your chemical peel appointment
If you have had any medical or professional cosmetic treatments (such as laser treatments, dermal fillers, etc.) wait until your skin is fully healed before booking your professional chemical peel. This is because after such treatments, your skin may be too sensitized to undergo a chemical peel treatment. You should always consult our skin care experts before you consider combining treatments – we would be happy to help devise a targeted, personalized treatment strategy for you.
Avoid any kind of treatment that would impact your skin
For at least one week prior to your treatment, avoid waxing, professional hair removal, and other skin rejuvenating treatments, as well as topical prescription treatments containing Retinol, AHAs and BHAs. Just like the previous points, this is because these treatments and procedures may sensitize your skin so much that a chemical peel may be more harmful than helpful.
Don’t get a chemical peel close to an important event
While the recovery time is minimal for your chemical peel treatment, you still don’t want to get your chemical peel right before a special event. You may experience inflammation immediately after your peel, which could last a few days. Your skin also needs time to rest and recover after the heavy-duty exfoliation of a chemical peel. So if you have a party or important event happening in the next two weeks, you should wait until after for your chemical peel appointment.
These are just some general guidelines. During your chemical peel procedure, one of our highly trained medical aestheticians will provide you with complete pre-and-post care instructions that are specific to your needs. You will also receive detailed and personalized guidance on how to prep your skin before the procedure – be sure to follow all instructions for the best results!
