The Acne Guide

We all struggle with some form of acne from time to time. Whether it’s a stray pimple in adulthood or an inflamed breakout during adolescence, acne can be a source of frustration and embarrassment, regardless of age. Acne can appear in several forms, from tiny whiteheads to large, painful cysts.

Acne can be spurred by a combination of factors, including genetics, hormones, and lifestyle. For example, our skin produces sebum to naturally moisturize and protect itself. However, when excess sebum, dirt, and dead skin cells start clogging the pores on our skin, this causes bacterial growth and inflammation, forming red pustules on the face. Sound familiar? You guessed it. This is acne.

Acne commonly visibly appears on the face but also frequently occurs on the back, neck, chest, shoulders, and buttocks. Hormonal fluctuations can increase sebum production, so acne can be triggered during puberty or using birth control throughout menstruation and menopause. They can also resurface during pregnancy or post-partum. In addition, genetics often play a role, as some people may be predisposed to overactive oil glands or a greater sensitivity to bacteria.

While the causes of acne may be beyond our control, several factors can exacerbate the condition. Poor hygiene habits, such as not washing or touching your face regularly, can introduce bacteria to your skin and make acne worse. Certain medications, including some types of birth control pills and steroids, can also aggravate acne.

For most of us, acne can wreak havoc on our self-esteem and erode our sense of body positivity. In a counter-productive urge to make the acne disappear, we resort to things like popping or scratching pimples or using unconventional spot-treatment products on our breakouts (e.g., Toothpaste?! Eye drops?!). These urges only worsen things and often lead to permanent scarring or skin damage.
